Chiharu Shiota is a performance and installation artist, Born 1972 in Osaka, Japan and now Lives and works in Berlin, Germany. He is best known for creating room-filling, monumental yet delicate, poetic environments. Shiota has transformed Blain Southern in Berlin with her ‘Uncertain Journey’, using 750,000 meters of thread from 5000 balls of blood red yarn.
Shiota finds diverse visual expressions for these subject matters, the most celebrated being impenetrable installations made of black thread which often enclose various households and everyday objects. Chiharu says “As people come in at first they look around and then they see an infinite line. Just as the universe is infinite, there appears to be no end to this line of yarn.”
